Americans sweep the podium in Shanghai
Created on 2011-05-01

A change of bike may have brought Jeremiah Smith the luck he needed to win the BMX Street gold at the KIA X Games Asia in Shanghai on Sunday.

The American's consistency in the finals of the highly-contested event proved to be the difference, as Smith beat a hard-riding Brian Kachinsky and Dakota Roche to complete an American sweep of the podium.

After collecting his gold medal, the biker admitted that he was surprised by his victory, saying: " I don't know what to say- this was really a surprise to me."

What probably did it for Smith was his Bar-manual double peg no-footed trick can that lit up the Jiangwan audience during his final run, and the champion revealed that this was his first time competing on a street course like the one at the KIA X Games.

"I love it", he exclaimed, "even though it's the only one I've ridden."

The overjoyed winner also let ESPNSTAR.com's Kelvin Tan on a little scoop- he had changed his bike recently before the competition in Shanghai.

"I was riding a black and green bike till recently, and I wanted to try something different, so I went with this purple one", Smith revealed.

Another fan of the street course in the Jiangwan Stadium was silver-medalist Kachinsky, who said: " I love how the rails are so close to each, which works for me as I prefer to do rail trick combinations consecutively."

Third-placed Dakota Roche was also pleased with his finish.

He exclaimed: " I'm so stoked, this is my first X games medal- never thought I'd get one."

Roche believes that his ability to perform under pressure made the difference on Sunday, saying: " It all came together on my last run. The pressure was certainly on, and my combination of an amalgamation of 540's, a Truck Driver, Toothpicks and 180's certainly must have helped."

One thing all three competitors have in command was how gushing they were of the crowd in the Jiangwan Stadium, and all three exclaimed in unison: " The fans are simply fantastic here!"

The American trio certainly repaid the fans with some fantastic riding, and the thousands at the venue will certainly hope that the action is as thrillng on Monday, 2 May, in the upcoming BMX Mini Mega finals!
