Fans were treated to an action sports festival with four event finals on the last day of the 2009 KIA X Games Asia.
Chris Haffey (AIL Park), Takeshi Yasutoko (AIL Vert), Garrett Reynolds (BMX Street) and Andy Macdonald (Skateboard Vert) were the big winners with a gold medal in the bag.
Four spectacular finals left Shanghai fans with plenty of memories of the 11th edition of the KIA X Games Asia, when the event finished with a flourish on the final day of competition. The four-day event registered the best spectator attendance in the event's history with a record number of 54,500 fans at Shanghai's KIC Jiangwan Sports Center - a sign of the growing popularity of Asia's biggest action sports competition.
Yesterday's afternoon rain clearly did not deter the enthusiastic crowds from packing the venue today. Visitors were treated to a sensational back-to-back showpiece event that featured top action sports athletes in three thrilling categories - the Skateboard Vert, BMX Street and the Aggressive Inline Street and Vert events. Many were also enthralled by the Moto X demonstrations that entertained spectators throughout the day.
Said Harvey Davis, ESPN STAR Sports Vice President, Event Management: "This is the best KIA X Games Asia we've had, and it's heartening to see how big the brand has become with so many supporters cheering for the athletes and participating at our sponsors' interactive booths over the four days of competition. Many had braved the rain yesterday to catch their world-class performances and they were not disappointed today with four massive finals that featured top names in every category.
"We'd like to thank our title sponsor Kia Motors, our partners Yangpu District, SMG and sponsors Pony, Mountain Dew and Doritos as well as the athletes and people of Shanghai for making this a successful event, and we look forward to coming back next year to continue building on this year's success," he added.
As for the high-flying action at the venue, veteran skateboarder Andy Macdonald and Japanese skating star Takeshi Yasutoko both created X Games Asia history on the vert ramp, winning gold medals in their respective events. While the American became the first to win consecutive gold medals in the skateboard vert final, Takeshi's fourth gold medal in the inline vert final made him the inline skater with the most individual gold medals, surpassing his older brother Eito.
An excited Macdonald said: "This is my third straight win in Shanghai. Every time I have competed here, I have won and I hope it continues that way. This is also the first time I managed to land a 720 here so I am very happy. One of the surprises for me this year was meeting 13-year-old Moto Shibata of Japan. He's really good because I was only starting to learn how to skateboard when I was his age."
Aggressive In-Line defending champion Rian Arnold from Australia had trouble managing this year's new street course, which allowed American Chris Haffey to skate away with the gold medal with his repertoire of amazing tricks and near flawless technique.
Day four of competition concluded with the BMX Street finals in which Garrett Reynolds of the USA won his second straight KIA X Games Asia gold, beating out Spain's Sergio Layos for the second year in a row. Reynolds dominated the rest of the field with an incredible first run that featured a No Hander to Ice Pick down the big rail and a 180 Bar Spin down the big stairs.
"It feels good to win two years in a row. I really like the fans here in Shanghai and it is really great that the KIA X Games Asia featured the street course this year. The competitors from Thailand have always impressed me and the Shanghai fans are awesome," said Reynolds.
The KIA X Games Asia 2009 showcased more than 200 top action sport athletes from more than 20 countries across five continents in the BMX freestyle, Aggressive In-line Skating, Skateboarding and Sport Climbing events. In addition to the competitive events, visitors also enjoyed the high-octane Freestyle Moto X demonstrations by some of the world's best riders.
